New Opportunities Beyond Fresh Water
Emerging technologies are also creating additional value from desalination.
Brine, once considered a waste product, is increasingly being used to recover valuable minerals and produce commercial products such as industrial and food-grade salt. Large-scale projects, including Indonesia’s MAVEN Brine Mining Project, demonstrate how desalination can simultaneously generate clean water while supporting resource recovery.
Industrial water reuse and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems are also expanding rapidly throughout China, India and Southeast Asia.
Supporting Tourism and Remote Communities
Small-scale and modular desalination systems are becoming an attractive solution for islands and tourism destinations experiencing seasonal water shortages.
